They may have been a little slow on the uptake, but re/insurers are now embracing social media with gusto. Intelligent Insurer investigates how companies are using these new forms of media and communications to their advantage.

Judging by the growing number of reinsurance bloggers and tweeters, there is a now clear understanding in the re/insurance industry that the social media phenomenon is here to stay—and that it can be a hugely valuable tool.

Trawl the Internet and you’ll find informative blog posts from the likes of Kiln, Guy Carpenter and Willis, insightful commentary from @reinsurancegirl (aka Mairi Mallon); and valuable information from sites such as MySlipcase or Steve Evans’ Artemis blog, a long running online source of news, analysis and insight on the alternative risk transfer, insurance-linked security and catastrophe bond markets.

“Social media are definitely useful and increasing in relevance in the re/insurance industry,” says Charlene Goodwin, who formerly worked for catastrophe risk modelling firm EQECAT.
