60 seconds with Alan Corney

Alan Corney, the recently appointed chief executive officer (CEO) of retail, Lockton, MENA, speaks to Intelligent Insurer about Lockton’s future plans, his love of films and his wealth of experience in the insurance industry.

Why is this move right for you at this stage in your career?

My career has spanned three decades during which I have been underwriter, broker and end buyer across diverse geographies and industries. The collective experiences I have been fortunate enough to enjoy I believe will bring new dynamics to Lockton and their clients in a region witnessing incredible growth and development. I have the opportunity to share those experiences and bring positive change.

What will you bring to the role?

Experience, diversity and fresh perspectives to our client’s ever changing risk profiles. Additionally, having been a buyer for the past six years working in joint ventures with many of the world’s blue chip companies, I have an appreciation for the content, quality and structure of service a client should demand to support their objectives.

What are your initial objectives in the new role?

I need to integrate quickly with the team, understand the strengths and weaknesses and bring additional support, as required, to enhance the service offering to our clients. Lockton MENA has embarked on an aggressive expansion programme in multiple geographies and we need strong core management and service teams with the ability to deliver (and after a week I am greatly encouraged).

What will be your biggest challenge in the new role?

Lockton will be opening new offices in different countries each with their own unique nuances. We need to be able to expand in a controlled manner whilst instilling the Lockton global service standards to each office. With the inevitable need for new hires, maintaining the high standards we enjoy presently will always be a challenge, but one I believe we are well-equipped to manage.

Why did you choose to work in this industry initially?

To be honest, I fell into insurance due to my sister already working with the Sun Alliance (pre Royal merger). However, I quickly warmed to the profession when I saw the huge diversity of the sector and the enormous potential for self-development.

If you had chosen a different profession/career path, what would it have been?

I have a passion for the film industry. Whilst I might not have the face for a ‘front of camera’ role, any facet of film production would have been incredibly attractive.

What are you doing when you are not at work?

Family life with my 4-year old twins, my Lebanese wife and the large associated family absorb my spare time. However, I do endeavour to squeeze tennis and squash into the mix and I always enjoy a game a pool or snooker. Films have been and always will be my escape.

What is your secret vice?

I plead the 5th amendment.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself

I was a reporter (non-speaking) in a film in the 80’s with several A list actors (at that time). During the three-day shoot I was able to spend time socially with the lead actors.
