60 Seconds with Richard Salvini

Richard Salvini was recently appointed head of Triton Global's liability practice. Here he to talks to Intelligent Insurer about how he started in the business, his main objectives and sheepdogs.

Why is this move right for you at this stage in your career?

I have 20 years’ experience of the liability industry acting for insurers, adjusters, brokers and corporate clients. This includes not only litigation but also corporate claims handling work.

Triton Global has a longstanding, well established and successful claims handling business with some excellent technical handlers and lawyers acting for clients, many of whom are known to me.

My role involves building on the existing expertise within Triton Global and leading the development of our liability practice from a legal perspective.   This is in direct response to what our clients have asked us to do and my background and experience mean that I am ideally suited for this role. There are very few opportunities available which provide this degree of scope within an established business and in a market that is very competitive.

What will you bring to the role?

Hard work, experience and the ability to continue to listen to what our clients want from us, whilst also offering new ideas alongside a team that provides technical excellence and expertise.

What are your initial objectives in the new role?

My primary objectives are to understand the company and its operations in full. I am keen to get to know the team and maximise their expertise and experience in order to ensure that our market offering is in line with our clients’ expectations.

What will be your biggest challenge in the new role?

We have a large geographical footprint not just globally but also in the UK, with offices in London, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol. This reach is one of the strengths of Triton Global; however the legal team being based across different locations also presents challenges which I am keen to meet.

Why did you choose to work in this industry initially?

Whilst at university, I had the opportunity of a period of work experience in the insurance department of Hammond Suddards. My principal back then was Andrew McDougall, a junior partner at the time, who gave me a broad range of work including investigations and site visits.

I recall visiting company clients in just about every industry sector and the diversity and interest that brought to my work experience. It clearly worked as Andrew remained my boss for the following 24 years!

If you had chosen a different profession/career path, what would it have been?

I come from a farming family and so there is a chance it could have been agriculture related. However, I also love sport too, especially football. I was never going to be good enough to play professionally but a role, perhaps on the commercial side of the game, sounds appealing!

What are you doing when you are not at work?

I spend as much time as I can with my children doing a variety of activities as they all have different interests. I also play tennis and have developed a bit of a passion for cooking and baking! I love the countryside, walking and also watching football.

What is your secret vice?

No doubt about that – chocolate at around 11pm!

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself

I grew up on a farm and love animals. As a boy, I owned a professionally trained border collie working sheepdog called Bess. Sheepdogs have great qualities. Bess was incredibly intelligent, fast, aware of everything going on around her, but above all, fantastically loyal.
