BMS hires exec from Ascot; appoints Canada CEO

Broker BMS has made changes to its senior leadership with the appointment of Dawnmarie Black as senior vice president of the group and the appointment of Brian Gomes as chief executive officer of BMS’s Canadian operations.

Black joins the risk solutions team reporting to Ian Gormley, managing director of risk solutions in London. She will be based in Boston.

She has over 23 years in the industry and joins from Ascot Underwriting, where she also held the position of senior vice president. During her time at Ascot, she significantly increased the syndicate’s footprint in the US facultative market and MGA sector. Prior to this, Black was the executive managing director behind the development of Aon Benfield's FAConnect electronic placing platform.

Brian Gomes joined the group in May 2013 as executive vice president of BMS Group, from the Canadian Physiotherapy Association where he served as chief operating officer. He has more than a decade of industry knowledge and experience.

He will report to Nick Cook, BMS Group chief executive officer, in London.

Cook said: “It’s my great pleasure to announce that Dawnmarie has joined BMS’ Risk Solutions team. Her extensive experience in the MGA and facultative reinsurance markets positions her to lead our ambition of bringing more US MGA and cover holder business to the market.

“Brian joined BMS to set up our healthcare practice in Canada. Over the last twelve months he has done a fantastic job driving growth into our Canadian broking arm. It is now time to take advantage of our significant growth in Canada and further increase the international distribution of our broking capability. Brian’s drive, focus and industry recognition make him the right man to lead the Canadian platform.”

Gomes said: “I am hugely excited at taking the helm of BMS’ Canada operations after a successful first year of growth in the region. We’re well positioned to achieve the Group’s ambitions of broadening our distribution and I look forward to the coming year.”
