Canopius hires former Aspen Re exec

Canopius Group, the global specialty re/insurance platform of Sompo Japan, has appointed Elizabeth Powell as an international casualty treaty underwriter.

She takes up the role with immediate effect and will report to Graeme Brydon, divisional underwriter, casualty.

Powell joins Canopius’s international casualty treaty team which provides a broad range of expertise across various product lines in the casualty treaty market. She joins from IRB Brasil Re, and previously Aspen Re.

She will play a key role in the expansion of Canopius’s international casualty treaty business in South and Central America.

Brydon said: “I am very pleased to welcome Elizabeth to the team. She is a talented underwriter who has already displayed an ability to develop new business and a profitable book. She will add strength to our London team while building our South American account.

“The South American market has shown increasing demand for both insurance and reinsurance casualty products. Elizabeth’s in-depth knowledge of the region’s casualty markets further enhances our capabilities and complements the existing skillset within the team. Her language skills, experience and network of local contacts will be a significant asset as we look to expand our presence there.”
