Chaucer names new CUO, COO and deputy CEO

Chaucer Syndicates (Chaucer), the specialist Lloyd’s insurance group, has made several leadership promotions.

Bruce Bartell has been named as deputy chief executive officer of Chaucer, where he will work closely with the Johan Slabbert, chief executive officer of Chaucer, on key aspects of the company’s business management and strategy.

John Fowle is promoted to chief underwriting officer. He will provide direction to Chaucer’s underwriting strategy in his new role. Fowle will also continue as active underwriter of Chaucer Syndicate 1084.

David Bendle assumes the position of chief operating officer. John Fowle and David Bendle both joined the board of Chaucer Syndicates on 1 January 2016.

Penny Shaw is promoted to chief risk officer of Chaucer. She has been with the company since 2014.

Tony Gates will take the position of head of claims of Chaucer, with responsibility for the strategic development of claims, with a focus on first class customer service for clients and reinsurers.

“These promotions will have a positive impact on achieving our strategic goals. Each of these individuals has a strong track record of leadership and business achievement at Chaucer.”

Slabbert also said the promotions where “terrific examples” of the Chaucer’s ongoing commitment to evolving as a company and the progress of its management bench.
