Drunken motoring drives up premiums 150 percent

Drivers convicted of drink driving face premium increases of up to 150 percent, according to research by MoneySupermarket.

The survey found that the increase was dependent on the particular provider and also the gender of the driver, with men seeing the biggest average increases following a conviction.

The difference between the providers was marked, with increases premiums by as little as £164.73 to £1,427.62 for men, and from £139.59 to £1,117.37 for women.

“Taking the risk by drink driving can have dire consequences; it could lead to a hefty points conviction, a fine of up to £5,000, a 12 month driving ban and even a prison sentence,” said Peter Harrison, car insurance expert at MoneySupermarket.

“This will not only make it difficult for you to find an insurance provider willing to cover you in the future, but as our research has showed, the cost of your premium will increase substantially.”
