Kennedys expands Latin America presence

Kennedys, a law firms specialising in re/insurance, has opened offices in Brazil and Peru as part of its expansion in Latin America.

Fabio Torres, who will offer consultancy and risk management advice to re/insurance clients, will lead the company’s Brazil offices.

Kennedys will continue its existing association with TM Law, which practices civil, commercial and corporate law, with a special focus on the re/insurance industry.

Marco Rivera Noya will head up the Peru office, joining Kennedys as a partner. Rivera Noya has experience within the Peruvian insurance industry, joining from Osterling Abogados.

Associate Jorge Mere, who has transferred from Kennedys’ Miami office, and attorneys Noriko Hasegawa and Alonso Barreda, will support Rivera Noya. The office in Lima will focus on insurance and reinsurance, with a particular emphasis on regulatory matters and claims requiring local and international arbitration.

Nick Thomas, senior partner at Kennedys, says: “These are strategically important moves for Kennedys and add to our already considerable capabilities across Latin America. Our combination of global and local knowledge is valued greatly by our clients, and we will continue to look for growth driven by client need and strong market opportunities in the region and believe that after six years in Miami the next stage is to also establish offices in the most important Latin American jurisdictions.”

Alex Guillamont, head of Kennedys Americas, says: “Brazil and Peru are two of the top five economies in Latin America in terms of GDP and re/insurance premium, and a number of our global re/insurance clients have offices in these important jurisdictions.

“After several decades of providing legal advice from London, Madrid and Miami, the time has come to take the next step and be even closer to our clients to optimise the quality of our services.

“These developments in Lima and São Paulo enable us to provide a better service to our clients. I’m very pleased to formally welcome Fabio, with whom Nick and I have worked closely for many years, and Marco and his team, whose unique knowledge of their local jurisdictions will benefit our clients greatly.”
