Lancashire appoints director and chairman following resignation

The director and chairman of Lancashire Holdings has decided to step down.

Martin Thomas, who has served as a director on the Lancashire board for over 9 years and as chairman since 2007, will step down from both roles following this year's annual general meeting (AGM) on 4 May 2016.

The Lancashire Board has appointed current director Peter Clarke as his successor following the AGM.  Peter Clarke joined the Lancashire Board as an independent non-executive director in June 2014, having previously been the chief executive of the Man Group.

Thomas said: "I joined the Lancashire board in 2006, shortly after Lancashire's foundation, and assumed the Chairmanship in 2007.  It has been a privilege and a pleasure to have led the board of one of the most successful insurance companies of the "class of 2005", and one of the most successful financial services companies across the financial crisis.

“I am proud to have helped build and to have worked with a board, management team and business which demonstrate the real commercial benefits of a broad diversity.

“After nine years, it is the right time for a change, both for the business and for me. I am delighted to be able to pass on in May the Chairman's baton to Peter, who brings to the role an acute intellect and an appreciation of the importance of continuing our good governance in creating the space for strategic debate and leadership on the board."

Alex Maloney, Lancashire's chief executive officer, commented: "I would like to thank Martin for his constructive challenge, his strategic insight, his diplomatic skills and on a personal level for his support, good humour and encouragement over many years.

“Martin has made a major contribution to Lancashire's success during his long stewardship of the Lancashire board.  I would also like to thank Peter for agreeing to lead our board."

Clarke added: "Having served as a director for over a year it is a pleasure to be able to take on the Chairmanship of the Lancashire board.

“I would first like to thank Martin for his central role in building Lancashire as a successful business over many years, and I look forward to working closely with Alex, my other colleagues on the board and everyone within the business, in ensuring that Lancashire remains a nimble and dynamic business capable of delivering sector leading returns."
