Mapfre poaches QBE exec for construction role

Mapfre Global Risks (MGR), the Mapfre unit that specialises in providing insurance solutions for multinationals, has appointed Alex Haines as senior construction underwriter.

Haines will focus on building a portfolio of international construction business within the London market, MGR’s strategic base for growth of its international global risks business, and will report to Greg Harris, UK director.

He joins the firm from QBE, where he was construction portfolio. Haines has also formerly had roles at Heath Lambert, as a construction account handler and HSB as a construction/engineering underwriter, during his 14-year career in the market.

"Alex is a highly experienced and respected market professional; his hire is part of our ‘specialty lines’ strategy for London, as we continue to develop international portfolios across specific business lines, to offer brokers and our customers a wider range of products and options,” said Chris Smith, chief market officer, MGR International.

"MGR is strong in construction elsewhere and Alex’s hire is one of the first steps to building our presence in this market in London, as we grow the business, increase our international reach and reduce our dependency on Spain and Latin America.”

Haines added: “I am delighted to be joining such an ambitious, successful and client-focused business. With the backing of MAPFRE, MGR has a strength, stability and resources to be a major player in the global risks sector; I look forward to playing my part in supporting MGR’s dynamic international growth strategy.”
