Markel appoints China head

Markel International has appointed Hu Qianhai to head up the company’s business in the People’s Republic of China, based in Shanghai.

Hu will report to Matthew Cannock, principal officer and managing director of Markel Asia Pacific. He will lead the Markel team in China with the aim of providing on the ground local solutions for Chinese insurers.

Prior to joining Markel, Hu held a number of senior positions in insurance industry. He founded Huatai Property & Casualty’s special risks unit with Ace and was responsible for successfully growing the business of Huatai Property and Casualty Insurance.

William Stovin, president of Markel International said: “Qianhai has a proven ability to grow businesses in the competitive Chinese insurance market. We are confident that he will successfully use these skills to develop our Lloyd’s China based reinsurance business.

“He is well connected and respected in the Chinese insurance market place, [this] is an important appointment for us as we continue to develop our interests in the People’s Republic”.

Earlier this year, Markel announced plans to offer a local solution for Chinese insurers seeking to purchase treaty and facultative reinsurance, with capacity provided by Markel’s Syndicate 3000 at Lloyd’s and written through the Lloyd’s China platform.
