McGavick to chair Geneva Association

Michael McGavick, chief executive officer of XL Group, has been appointed as chairman of The Geneva Association.

McGavick takes over from Dr Nikolaus von Bomhard, CEO of Munich Re, who steps down by statutory requirement after four years as chairman. He received unanimous approval from the Association’s board of directors.

McGavick has been CEO of XL Group since 2008 and a board member of The Geneva Association since June 2011. From 2001 to 2005, he was chairman, president and CEO of Safeco Corporation. Prior to joining Safeco, he spent six years with CNA Financial Corporation, where he held various senior positions, including president and CEO of the company's largest commercial insurance unit. He has been involved in a number of industry, political, public affairs and community service activities.

McGavick is also currently chair of the Association of Bermuda Insurers & Reinsurers and of the Global Reinsurance Forum. He is also on the board of the American Insurance Association, the Insurance Information Institute and the International Insurance Society.

“It has been a great privilege to be the chairman of The Geneva Association over the last four years,” said Von Bomhard.

“Over this period, the Association has made great strides in developing research with relevance to the challenges faced by The Geneva Association insurance industry on behalf of its members. Today, the Association is the unrivalled forum for CEO-level peer group discussion on insurance issues amongst the chief executives of international insurance businesses.

“Mike’s deep knowledge of insurance as well as his considerable experience of governmental and public affairs issues means he is ideally suited to leading the Association in the next phase of its development.”

Commenting on his appointment, McGavick said: “The internationalisation of the insurance industry and the rapidly developing risk landscape mean that the Association’s role as a think tank and forum for industry discussion is more important than ever. I look forward to working with the industry’s leaders in addressing the challenges and opportunities we face.”

The election took place on 6 June at The Geneva Association’s annual General Assembly in London where the Association is celebrating its 40th anniversary.
