Reinsurance more fun than banking: Flandro

The reinsurance market offers a more interesting career path than the banking sector, according to a top exec at JLT Re.

David Flandro, executive vice president, global head of strategic advisory at JLT Re, said: "As someone who left sell-side equity research for reinsurance at a time when banking was riding high, I can say the reinsurance sector is more balanced, more interesting, more hands-on, and more fun – especially for those in junior roles.”

He added that there is also less of a differential in terms of the monetary reward now than there used to me. “If it used to exist it doesn't appear to now," he said.

Flandro served as an equity research analyst at Merrill Lynch, before departing for Benfield in 2006, where he served as industry analysis and research team member.

Recently, Intelligent Insurer asked whether, in the aftermath of the banking crisis, has the re/insurance industry become more attractive as a career proposition for talented people than it was previously?
