Second super typhoon to make landfall in Fujian Province this season

Super Typhoon Meranti, a Category 4-equivalent hurricane, is expected to make landfall on the coast of Fujian Province, China.

The typhoon is also forecast to strengthen during the next few days, according to catastrophe modelling firm AIR Worldwide.

Following Nepartak, which made landfall in Taiwan on July 8 in the Fujain Province, Meranti is the second super typhoon to form this season.

Anna Trevino, senior scientist at AIR Worldwide, said: “Currently about 900 kilometres southeast of Taipei and traveling west-northwest at 25 kilometres per hour through an area with favourable conditions for continued intensification—low wind shear and very warm ocean water—Meranti is expected to pass by the northern Philippines, close enough to bring damaging winds and heavy precipitation to the Batanes and Babuyan islands and northern Luzon Island on Tuesday.”

She added: “On Wednesday, Meranti is expected to bring damaging winds, rough surf, and heavy rainfall (between 250 mm and 500 mm, with 750 mm possible in the mountains) to Taiwan as the storm nears, but then passes to the south of the island. The eastern and southwestern parts of Taiwan are expected to experience the greatest impacts from Meranti.”

Meranti is expected to make landfall on Thursday night, after bypassing Taiwan to the south on Wednesday, when it will have weakened but still has the potential to cause damage, said AIR.

According to AIR, just behind Meranti is another tropical system that could develop later this week and impact both Taiwan and China.
