Sompo Canopius hires former XL Catlin head as Asia Pacific and MENA CEO

Sompo Canopius has appointed Mark Newman as chief executive officer (CEO) of Asia Pacific, Middle East and North Africa (MENA), as part of an expansion of the business to look at broader geographical coverage.

Based in Sompo Canopius’ Singapore office, Newman will report to Mike Duffy, chief underwriting officer.

Newman has over 20 years of experience, having most recently served as head of Asia and deputy CEO of Asia Pacific at XL Catlin.

Prior to this, he served as chief operating officer at Guy Carpenter Asia Pacific.

Duffy comments: “It’s important for us to invest in talented people as we work to move Sompo Canopius onto a more nimble footing. Mark is well known and respected across the Asia Pacific, Middle East and North Africa markets and he will bring a new level of insight and a different perspective to our business in those areas.”

Newman added: “There’s a positive vibe about Sompo Canopius – I am looking forward to setting the long term vision and then working with the team to build a sustainable and profitable business.”
