The Hartford hires former Gen Re president

Morris Tooker, the former president of Gen Re’s property/casualty reinsurance business, has resurfaced at US insurer The Hartford.

Tooker resigned from Gen Re in January, just weeks after he was appointed as senior vice president of General Re Corporation, the group’s holding company.

He joins The Hartford as vice president and chief underwriting officer for the firm’s property and casualty business. He will report to Doug Elliot, president of The Hartford.

Tooker will lead the development of the company’s underwriting approach for new markets and growth areas, as well as oversee underwriting across the The Hartford’s small commercial, middle market, large commercial and personal lines segments.

Elliot said: “Mo is a recognised and admired leader in the global insurance industry. His deep knowledge of the international, property and specialty insurance markets will be instrumental in driving our expanded risk appetite as we pursue growth opportunities in new and evolving markets.”

Tooker said: “I am excited to join The Hartford and be a part of this iconic industry brand. In my prior roles, I have had the opportunity to see firsthand the strength of The Hartford’s underwriting capabilities and its dynamic, highly-engaged leadership team, committed to profitable growth. I look forward to working closely with this team to build upon those strengths as we expand our product capabilities and deepen our distribution partnerships.”
