Three marine claims hit market
Despite being only six days into the year, the marine insurance market has already taken a battering with three claims underway.
Two casualties, Hoegh Osaka and Cemfjord, took place in UK waters, with the third taking place in the Libyan port of Derna.
Norway-based Gard has confirmed that it is the P&I insurer for the Hoegh Osaka, the cargo ship which was grounded off the Isle of Wight after it began listing on January 3, 2015.
Gard added that it is the claims lead on the hull and machinery policy of which it has a share, and that it is working closely with the owner and authorities to offer help in resolving the situation.
Skuld, also a Norwegian marine insurer, is the P&I insurer for the cargo ship Cemfjord, which sank in Scotland on January 3, 2015, with eight men on board.
The third claim originates from Libya, amid reports that a Greek-operated oil tanker chartered by Libya’s national oil company at the port of Derna has been bombed by the Libyan air force.
