Extent of Japanese flooding revealed

The extent of the recent flooding in Japan has been revealed, with data from three cities detailing the total scope and number of buildings impacted in some of the worst affected areas.

Data from ICEYE shows that 337 km² of the observed area was flooded, while substantial damages have occurred in three major regions.

Some 36,909 buildings were impacted in Kurume City, which experienced 106.14 km² of flooding.

63,021 buildings were impacted in Saga City, which saw 74.74 km² of flooding, and 16,093 buildings were impacted in Takeo City, with 40.65 km² of flooding in the area.

Current data is only available for these three regions.

Torrential rain has caused landslides and flooding in Western Japan, and several people are believed to have died. More rain is expected in the same regions this week.
