Broker team from JLT Re cycle to Monte Carlo

Seven members of JLT Re cycled to Monte Carlo to raise £50,000 for two charities: the Wooden Spoon Society, the charity of British and Irish Rugby supporting mentally, physically disadvantaged children; and Action on Addiction, a charity that looks to free people from addiction.

Emma Biggs, Barry Keegan, Paul Harris, David Ibeson, Chris Medlock, Harry Owen and Andrew Sainsbury set off on their nine day ride from Lime Street on August 30 2013, reaching Casino Square on September 7.

“We have cycled 800 miles, so an average of 89 miles per day,” said Biggs. “It was a tough ride in places with some very challenging hill climbing – the total vertical elevation gain for the journey is 14km which is the equivalent of reaching the stratosphere, or climbing the height of Mt Everest one and a half times! Plus on day seven we tackled the famous 21 hairpin bends of Alpe D’Huez, which is 13.8km in length and an average incline of 7.9 percent.”

Already surpassing their fundraising target prior to setting off, the group has been overwhelmed by the support.

“It’s a great thing that they’re doing – and certainly saves on air fares,” said Alastair Speare-Cole, CEO of JLT Re. “We’re very grateful for everyone that has supported our team.”

The team spent between seven and eight hours a day cycling and faced a variety of terrain.

“It was a beautiful ride and we’ve had some great weather too, said Biggs. “On day three we ended with a fun race against the sunset to the hotel.”
