During his two years at the helm of US specialty insurer Ironshore, chief executive Kevin Kelley has overseen rapid growth in terms of premium income and scope of business.
As the company now turns its sights overseas, he reflects on the challenges of maintaining strong organic growth while not overstretching its resources.
“I have just come back from China. We see many opportunities there as well as in the Asian region generally. We are looking to explore those from two perspectives: we see the region as a potential capital source, either through reinsurance or other means; and we are also looking at how our products and expertise could be of use to clients out there. But whatever we do, it will be focused and very respectful of that market,” says Kelley.
No firm decisions have been made yet, but he believes the company will open its first office in the region this year. It may start by offering just a single product, he says. But it is a significant start in the region for what is a rapidly growing and very ambitious company.
