New figures from the UK Health and Safety Executive point to a possible peak in the number of asbestos-related deaths from mesothelioma. Intelligent Insurer investigates.

Asbestos. It’s a word that makes re/insurance veterans groan and re/insurance novices frown at such a reaction.

It is the former wonder-mineral that was supposed to transform the world in the 1950s—only for its use to be banned and reviled when its carcinogenic properties were revealed. Asbestos almost destroyed Lloyd’s when it became apparent that it was killing people and that asbestos-related insurance claims were skyrocketing upwards.

But that was years ago. It’s not still a threat … is it?
