60 seconds with Miguel Roure

Law firm Goldberg Segalla recently boosted its insurance team in London with the appointment of Miguel Roure as a partner. Here he speaks to Intelligent Insurer about strategy, a common goal and refereeing rugby matches.

Why is this move right for you at this stage in your career?

Joining Goldberg Segalla was the obvious choice for me. The firm is incredibly passionate about being the leading firm for the international insurance and reinsurance markets, and I’m excited to be part of the energy.

What will you bring to the role?

I have years of experience serving clients in Spain and Latin America, so I’ll be able to help the firm expand even further into those markets. I also spent many years working in-house for global insurance firms, and the perspective I gained from that experience has been very valuable in private practice.

What are your initial objectives in the new role?

My initial role will be twofold: for my existing clients in Spain, Latin America and other regions, I’ll work to introduce them to the incredible depth of experience that my new colleagues at Goldberg Segalla have; and for Goldberg Segalla’s existing clients with international issues, I will work to assist them in markets where my experience is deep. A lawyer who knows the culture, jurisdiction, and language is often the key to a favourable conclusion.

Why did you choose to work in this industry initially?

Most people probably don’t realise it, but behind the scenes, insurance touches on nearly every aspect of business and life. Early on in my career, I became intrigued by the legal and regulatory aspects of it and how I could work with insurers to help solve their most pressing problems.

If you had chosen a different profession/career path, what would it have been?

As a former Spanish Army officer, I have a great respect for strategy and how important it is for success in anything. If I had to take another career, it would probably be as an adviser to help businesses learn from my experience in some way; teaching them how to formulate and execute strategies that help them manage risk and avoid surprises.

What are you doing when you are not at work?

In my downtime, you can usually find me refereeing rugby matches in Gloucester, reading at home, or sailing in Spain.

What is your secret vice?

Most people would probably say that my work is my passion, so if working too much is a vice, then that’s it!

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself.

I’m a history enthusiast and speak five languages, including my native Spanish.
