AIMU elects new president

John Miklus has been named the new president of the American Institute of Marine Underwriters (AIMU) - the trade association representing the US ocean marine insurance market. Miklus succeeds James Craig, president of AIMU since 2003, who will retire on December 31, 2013.

“John brings his extensive marine insurance and reinsurance experience, valuable leadership and management skills and personal commitment to professional education and career development to represent the interests of US ocean marine underwriters before a variety of important international and domestic forums and build on AIMU’s outstanding education and training programs," said AIMU chairman Roger Ablett, who is practice leader at Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty.

A senior ocean marine insurance and reinsurance executive, Miklus was most recently senior vice president at Guy Carpenter & Co., where he managed reinsurance client relationships for several leading US marine insurers, as well as global marine insurance companies based in Japan, South Korea and China.

Miklus began his insurance career as an inland/ocean marine underwriter trainee at The Hartford Insurance Group in 1982 and held several positions at Hart Re Company before becoming senior vice president & marine treaty underwriter. A graduate of Bowdoin College, Miklus also has served as an instructor for AIMU educational courses.
