Arcus Syndicate 1856 promotes Gfeller, Delaney

Arcus Syndicate 1856 (Arcus 1856) has promoted Adrian Gfeller to the position of managing director and Gary Delaney to the position of head of operations effective August 1.

Gfeller was previously chief risk officer at Arcus 1856 since its launch in 2015. Delaney was previously syndicate manager at Arcus 1856.

Gfeller commented: “Our syndicate operates as a highly effective conduit between the capital markets and the re/insurance sector. In this dynamic marketplace, our diverse but balanced portfolio and underwriting stance enable us to respond quickly and capitalise on the developing potential we see.”

Arcus 1856 also announced the appointment of David Booth as interim active underwriter. Booth has previous experience as active underwriter for Barbican Syndicate 1955. He will continue in his role as director of underwriting for Barbican Managing Agency.

In addition, Sarah Smith, currently an underwriter at Arcus 1856, has been appointed as acting deputy active underwriter.

Gfeller said: “Barbican Managing Agency provides invaluable support to Arcus 1856 and we are delighted that David will act as interim active underwriter as we look to appoint a suitably experienced underwriter to fill the position on a permanent basis.”

Arcus 1856 focuses on reinsurance solutions, combining insurance-linked securities (ILS) structures and insurance products.

The Lloyd’s syndicate is 100 percent backed by funds managed by the Credit Suisse ILS division and is headed-up by the firm’s former London-based ILS team. Managed by Barbican Managing Agency Arcus 1856 has a 2018 stamp capacity of £104 million.

Its underwriting remit spans both property reinsurance and speciality lines, including marine, energy, cyber, space and aviation, on a proportional, risk XL and Cat XL basis.

In recent months, Arcus 1856 has expanded its underwriting team with the appointment of Vera Schneider as senior energy underwriter, who joined from Chaucer Syndicate 1084, and Michelle Whittaker as DUA class underwriter, who joined from Novae Syndicate 2007.
