Australia may face category 3 cyclone Owen

Tropical cyclone Owen is forecast to move towards the Queensland coast in Australia and may reach category 3 intensity by Thursday morning, December 13, according the country’s Bureau of Meteorology.

The cyclone is currently located over the southwestern Gulf of Carpentaria and is slow moving at present.

Owen is expected to bring destructive winds with gusts up to 170 km/h per hour as well as heavy rainfall which may lead to flash flooding. Tides may rise significantly above the normal high tide, with damaging waves and minor flooding.

"Heavy rainfall will be one of the major impacts of this event,” said Bureau of Meteorology Weather Services manager, Richard Wardle.

"Forecast models are now fairly consistent in bringing the system down Queensland's east coast as a low, with impacts including heavy rainfall with the potential for flash flooding and damaging to destructive winds,” Wardle added.
