Barcelona-type terrorist attacks boost travel cover demand

Interest in terrorism coverage has roughly doubled over the past year based on sales data, travel insurance comparison platform Squaremouth said Aug. 17.

Demand for cover is driven by terrorist attacks such as the one occurred in Barcelona on Aug. 16, when a van smashed into people on Las Ramblas, a famous boulevard in central Barcelona, killing 13 people and injuring more than 100, according to media reports.

It follows a number of similar attacks in the French coastal city of Nice in July 2016, at the Berlin Christmas market in December 2016 and in June 2017 on London Bridge.

Most travellers who are concerned about terrorism want trip cancellation coverage, in the event they can't travel because an attack occurs at their destination before they leave for their trip, according to the statement.

Travel insurance can also bring individuals home if a terrorist attack occurs at their destination while they are travelling. Travel insurance with terrorism coverage typically includes cancellation coverage for travellers who haven't left, as well as interruption coverage for travellers currently in the city where the attack occurred.

Trip Interruption can refund prepaid trip costs when a trip is cut short for an unexpected reason, such as a terrorist attack, and can also cover a traveller's additional costs to return home early.
