Bolt, Swiss Re, Catlin triumph in II awards
Tom Bolt, the director of performance management at Lloyd’s, was voted the Re/insurance Leader of the Year in Intelligent Insurer’s annual global reinsurance industry awards based on a comprehensive survey of senior industry executives globally.
Bolt edged ahead of last year’s winner, Berkshire Hathaway’s Ajit Jain, securing a score of 7.39 out of ten compared with Jain’s 7.15. The scores were based on the responses of 500 industry executives who were asked to score a pre-set list of individuals out of ten.
In the reinsurance categories, Swiss Re came out as the Reinsurance Company of the Year (with GWP of more than $2 billion) while Catlin Re scooped the same prize for reinsurers with GWP of less than $2 billion.
The overall winners were determined by companies’ performance in underlying categories. Swiss Re won Best Reinsurer for Innovation and Best Reinsurer for Client Service; Munich Re won Best Reinsurer for Expertise/Market Knowledge and Best Reinsurer for Ability to Pay Claims. Swiss Re won the overall based on its superior performance in the categories it did not win.
Catlin won all four of the underlying categories for smaller reinsurers: Best Reinsurer for Innovation, Best Reinsurer for Client Service, Best Reinsurer for Expertise/Market Knowledge and Best Reinsurer for Ability to Pay Claims.
The awards were based on the responses of 500 executives globally who were polled by the Intelligent Insurer in-house research team. They were asked to score pre-set shortlists of companies based on their perception of their performance based on different criteria.
These short-lists were determined by an earlier stage of the survey, which asked respondents open-ended questions about which companies they associate with quality based on different criteria. In this part of the survey, respondents were also asked to explain their answers, giving the research team a substantial body of opinion on each company mentioned.
