Carbon looks to grow as technology-driven MGU; makes dual hires

Specialist independent managing general underwriter (MGU)  Carbon Underwriting has hired Tokio Marine's data analytics specialist to enhance its capabilities in this area.

Navdeep Dhuti (pictured) has been appointed as data engineer, and Sophia Johnson as data services associate.

Dhuti joins Carbon from customer analytics consultancy Acrotrend Solutions, where he was a data engineer/data scientist. Prior to that, he founded The Elephant app, a web application where university students can Freecycle for free and before that, he was a full stack developer for Cameron and Wilding and QuizSlides.

Johnson joins Carbon from Tokio Marine Kiln where she was a data analyst. She had previously been a Bordereaux technician for White Oak Underwriting Agency.

These appointments aim to enhance Carbon’s data analytics expertise following the recent hiring of Mark Oldroyd as head of data engineering and Fergus Cooney as a data analytics engineer.

Nick Tye, CEO of Carbon, said: “As Carbon continues to grow as a technology-driven MGU and Lloyd’s Syndicate, market-leading data analytics is at the core of our company’s DNA. Our proprietary platform, Graphene, is a game-changer for the global delegated authority market and we will continue to build out its capabilities and user base. We are delighted to welcome Navdeep and Sophia to the Carbon family and I am sure that we will benefit enormously from their deep expertise and market experience.”

Dhuti commented: “Data is the new oil in the 21st century and Carbon is really at the forefront of disrupting the insurance market with Graphene as its data intelligence tool. With a background in building innovative technology for large corporates as well as start-ups, I am extremely excited to be part of Carbon’s journey in shaping the data-driven insurance world.”

Johnson added: “The analysis, management and sharing of high quality data has never been more important in our industry and the Carbon team are providing tangible value-add in enabling clients to make better informed and timely decisions. The Carbon team is always thinking outside the box and I am very excited to bring my fresh perspectives and ideas to this very talented business.”
