Cyclone Marcia losses estimated at A$33m

The Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) has estimated that insurance losses stemming from tropical cyclone Marcia stand at A$33 million ($25.7 million).

The council said that 5,000 claims have been lodged so far by policyholders affected by the cyclone which hit parts of central Queensland on February 20, 2015.

Rob Whelan, chief executive officer of ICA, said: “Insurers are pouring resources into the Rockhampton region to help their customers as efficiently and as swiftly as they can.

"The Insurance Council expects more claims will be lodged over the next few days. It's understandable that many householders will be more focused on food, water and electricity than contacting their insurer. However, I encourage anyone who intends to lodge a claim to contact their insurer soon. The insurer will prioritise cyclone claims and provide the appropriate assistance."
