Hardy CEO to head CNA Europe

CNA Financial Corporation has appointed David Brosnan, the chief executive of Lloyd’s insurer Hardy, as chief executive of CNA Insurance Company (CNA Europe).

The appointment will become effective on August 18, 2014.

Brosnan will continue to serve as the chief executive of Hardy, and report to Thomas Motamed, chairman of the Hardy board of directors and chairman and chief executive officer of CNA.

Motamed will assume the role of chairman of the CNA Europe board of directors subject to approval by the PRA.

He first joined CNA in May 2013 as senior vice president of international. His responsibilities included leading an underwriting team in the strengthening of CNA’s home foreign business, and an expansion of its international capabilities. Prior to CNA, he was with ACE Canada, most notably serving as president and CEO of ACE INA and ACE INA Life Insurance Companies.

Following a transition, John Hennessy, who has led CNA Europe since 2009, will become president and chief operating officer (COO) of CNA Canada. He is replacing Gary Owcar, the current leader of CNA’s Canadian operations, who plans to retire on September 15, 2014.

Hennessy will be responsible for executing profitable growth strategies for the global insurer’s Canadian operations. He will report to Dave Brosnan.

“These changes are part of a broad strategy to serve the unique and expanding needs of multinational customers,” said Motamed. “Dave’s international expertise and leadership experience with Hardy will further strengthen the solid reputation of both brands.

“John is a proven leader who has a successful track record of expanding our international capabilities. I am confident that his knowledge of international markets along with his strong underwriting background will further enhance our position as a global leader.

“In 2009, I asked Gary to suspend his retirement to lead Canada for CNA. I commend Gary on his leadership and thank him for the critical role he played in expanding our multinational capabilities.”
