Hurricane Irma claims reach $8.6bn in Florida

Claims from hurricane Irma which struck Florida in September 2018 have reached $8.6 billion in the state, according to the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation.

In February, 2018 losses from hurricane Irma had been at $7.95 billion in Florida.

The total number of claims has reached 924,439 as of April 6. Of the total 770,658 were linked to residential property, while commercial property contributed with 58,237 claims. According to the data supplied by insurers, 88.5 percent of claims have been closed so far.

Overall, Irma is estimated to have caused insured losses of $30 billion in North America, according to the latest sigma study from the Swiss Re Institute.
