Insurtech Brolly files first own claim with Hiscox after burglary

Insurance startup Brolly, which offers an AI-driven insurance app, is claiming on its own business insurance for the first time after its office was burgled.

Brolly had a break-in and the total loss from the burglary is estimated at around £15,000 worth of mostly Apple products.

“The door was smashed in and all our electronics were gone. Luckily most of the team take their laptops home to work in the evening, so it could have been worse,” said Phoebe Hugh, founder & CEO.

Brolly has their business insured with Hiscox and has started a claims process for the first time.

The fintech startup moved into its 1000 square foot London, UK office in 2017 after closing a £1 million seed round with Valar Ventures, Pi Labs and Entrepreneur First. Tech startups in Silicon Valley have been targeted before as it is easier to break into an office than to break into an Apple Store, according to a corporate statement.

Hugh said: “My first thought was: I really hope our insurance pulls through, and fast. If we weren’t covered, it would be a really significant loss as a startup. If I had one piece of advice to others it would be: get contents insurance and make sure you keep track of your stuff.”

The company was able to secure customer data immediately by remotely erasing the stolen phones and laptops, according to the statement.
