London insurtech to offer free cover to customers with suspected COVID-19

London-based insurtech Zego is offering customers who have been forced to self-isolate because of coronavirus (COVID-19) up to 14 days’ worth of free insurance cover.

The company hopes the offer will help to alleviate the financial strain felt by any of its customers unable to earn money for an extended period.

Zego specialises in flexible, usage-based insurance policies and currently insures a large portion of the UK’s delivery and ride-hailing workforce, partnering with companies including Uber and Deliveroo.

The offer will allow Zego’s customers who have fallen ill or suspect that they have COVID-19 to claim up to two weeks of free cover when they renew their policy.

Zego noted that as the COVID-19 situation continues to develop, the role of delivery workers, in particular, is set to become increasingly important. This was emphasised earlier this week, when the Government announced that all restaurants and pubs would be permitted to operate as takeaways, enabling them to keep operations going by delivering food to customers.

Sten Saar, CEO and co-founder of Zego, said: “Zego was founded to provide opportunity through flexible insurance and fair pricing. In these uncertain times, we will be doing everything we can to ensure customers continue to feel those benefits, and are not weighed down by fixed costs if they are unable to work.

“We will keep trying to build solutions to make our customers' lives easier, and are working hard as a team to meet new challenges as they arise. This job is being made much easier by our partners, including La Parisienne Assurances, who have been incredibly responsive and helpful during this process.”
