Monte Carlo or Bust drivers to arrive today

Some 15 Citroen 2CVs sponsored by a variety of re/insurers and some driven by well-known executives from the industry will arrive in Casino Square today (Sunday September 13) in time for the Monte Carlo Rendez-Vous, having made the 1,000-mile journey from 1 Lime Street since leaving on Wednesday September 9.

The Monte Carlo or Bust event is a charitable initiative by Lloyd’s and the London insurance market, which it is hoped will raise more than £50,000 for four selected charities: Demelza Hospice Care, RedR UK, Coombe Trust and Action against Hunger.

There will have been a number of stops for those taking part. The event’s official sponsor, Amundi Asset Management, hosted a party at the Chalet des Iles restaurant in the Bois de Boulogne, Paris, on the way.

Having arrived today, they will be driven to the conference venue tomorrow (Monday September 14) where John Nelson, chairman of Lloyd’s, and Inga Beale, CEO of Lloyd’s, will greet the drivers.

One of the companies taking part is reinsurance broker Capsicum Re, which has sponsored ‘Dolly’, one of the retro Citroen 2CVs. It is aiming to raise £250,000 for Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH)’s Tick Tock Club charity. Together with its joint venture partner Arthur J Gallagher, the broker has cornerstoned the appeal with a joint £50,000 donation. They are well on the way to reaching their £250,000 target.

Neville Ching, a managing partner at Capsicum Re, and Richard Borgonon, non-executive chairman of Capsicum Re Bermuda, are driving the retro Citroen on its 1,000-mile journey.

Rupert Swallow, CEO of Capsicum Re said: “We are incredibly close to reaching our target of £250,000 which is fantastic news and testament to the generosity and altruistic nature of the industry we work in.

“Great Ormond Street is an inspirational charity that is close to the hearts of many in Capsicum Re and Arthur J. Gallagher and this money is going towards a much-needed surgery centre that will enable GOSH to continue to provide world-leading paediatric surgery.

“I would like to thank everyone that has donated so far and also thank Nev and Richard for volunteering to drive ‘Dolly’. The Rendez- Vous Run is a great event and there will be a huge cheer when they arrive in Monte Carlo.”
