Qatar Re strengthens underwriting presence in Dubai

Qatar Re has expanded its underwriting presence in Dubai after appointing Manik Kak as senior executive officer (SEO), Tejal Bartlett as regional head of energy and Manik Sethi as regional head of marine.

The new hires and Qatar Re’s local team of experienced underwriting professionals will further boost the company’s facultative underwriting expertise in the growing Middle Eastern and Asia insurance markets.

All three will be based in Qatar Re’s branch office in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), which is managed by the Dubai Financial Services Authority.

Kak will replace Nabih Massad, who will move to Qatar Re’s Zurich branch to manage the underwriting of engineering treaty globally and engineering facultative for business, not underwritten out of the DIFC.

Kak has joined Qatar Re in June this year as SEO of its branch office in the DIFC, where he is responsible for overlooking the underwriting, risk management and compliance of the branch and expanding its operations in the region.

His career started in 2004 where he worked with Tata AIG in India as an executive for property and energy insurance, then moving on to Qatar Insurance Company as a senior commercial underwriter, based in Doha.

In 2009, Kak started working with Zurich Insurance Company in Dubai to head the company’s regional property, engineering, construction and marine business in various functions.

Bartlett started working with Qatar Re from May this year, joining from Zurich Global Corporate Middle East (ZGCME), where she was head of global energy and expert underwriter for onshore energy for the EMEA region.

She started her career at Liberty Mutual before moving to ACE European Group where she was the onshore energy manager.

Sethi also joined Qatar Re from May this year. Prior to Qatar Re, he held the positions of underwriting manager for marine lines at ZGCME and marine underwriter for Royal & Sun Alliance.

“We are very pleased to further strengthen our facultative underwriting team with these key appointments at the DIFC,” said Johannes Goebel, global head of facultative underwriting & head of engineering at Qatar Re.

“Their client network, industry experience and in-depth knowledge of both emerging and mature markets expands our regional underwriting capabilities, reflects our commitment to the important Dubai reinsurance hub and will be instrumental to the strategic positioning and continued development of our global facultative portfolio.”
