Zurich CEO Greco replaces AXA's Buberl on Pan-European Insurance Forum

Mario Greco, chief executive officer (CEO) of Zurich Insurance Group, has been appointed chair of the Pan-European Insurance Forum (PEIF), succeeding Thomas Buberl, CEO of the AXA Group.

Greco will chair the forum for two years, focussing on new as well as long-term challenges faced by the industry - such as climate change, sustainability and the continuing rapid digitalisation - while "advocating for practical and broad-based solutions".

The PEIF is a platform where the CEOs of major European headquartered re/insurance groups discuss policy and regulatory matters affecting the European insurance industry, including with external stakeholders, such as regulators and policymakers.

The forum also collaborates with industry bodies such as Insurance Europe, the CFO Forum and the CRO Forum. It strives to foster a competitive European insurance market as well as a better understanding of the insurance business model and its role in the economy and society.

Buberl said: “I am pleased to hand over the role of chair of the Pan-European Insurance Forum to Mario and wish to congratulate him on his appointment. The PEIF is an essential platform for dialogue between our industry and its European stakeholders. I am confident that, with Mario Greco as chair, the PEIF will continue to build its reputation for objectively and constructively engaging with some of the biggest financial and regulatory issues facing Europe.”

Greco commented: “I would like to thank Thomas Buberl for his leadership and commitment to advancing the PEIF’s agenda during his time as chair. Under Thomas, the PEIF contributed to the EU sustainability agenda and was deeply committed to the transition towards a more sustainable future, which stands the Forum in good stead for the future.”

He added: “The role of insurers - in supporting people when they need it most and in managing and mitigating risk - has never been in greater focus than it is today. The COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting global economic fallout have had a seismic impact on society and the global risk landscape. At the same time, climate change, sustainability and the continuing rapid digitalization of society and economies remain some of the most important long-term challenges our industry must address.

"My PEIF colleagues and I will embrace these new challenges in the spirit of openness and cooperation, while advocating for practical and broad-based solutions.”
