Aspen plucks AXA XL leader to spearhead ‘ambitious’ reinsurance strategy
Aspen Insurance Holdings has tapped an experienced executive from AXA XL to take the reins as its reinsurance chief underwriting officer and spearhead its “ambitious” strategy for the segment.
John Welch (pictured) joins Aspen as CUO reinsurance. He will be based in Stamford, CT.
Welch was most recently chief executive, domestic markets at AXA XL Re, where he led local reinsurance underwriting teams around the world. He previously held a number of senior roles at AXA XL, XL Catlin Group and XL Group. He has over 30 years of global experience in reinsurance.
In his new role, Welch will lead and be accountable for Aspen Reinsurance, including designing and delivering the underwriting strategy for the segment. He will report to Christian Dunleavy, group chief underwriting officer, and join the group executive committee.

John will play a crucial role driving Aspen’s ambitious agenda for its reinsurance segment.”
