Cyclone Burglind (Eleanor) costs insurers €643m

Extratropical cyclone “Burglind”, also known as “Eleanor” caused insurers property losses of €643 million, according to estimates by insurance data provider PERILS.

The event caused significant damage across Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the UK between Jan. 2 and 3, 2018.

At least six people died in France during the event. The incurred industry loss levels for the affected individual countries were however not unusual, with the exception of Switzerland, where the Burglind event loss as estimated by PERILS is expected to be reached once in approximately 13 years.
