O'Connell fired by Goldberg Segalla after football rant
Lawyer Clive O'Connell, partner in Goldberg Segalla and a well-known figure in the re/insurance industry, has been fired with immediate effect after comments he made about rival fans in the aftermath of a football match went viral.
Chelsea fan O’Connell was filmed launching a furious rant after his side lost to Liverpool on Saturday October 31, 2015. In it, he made derogatory comments about Liverpool fans.
O’Connell later issued a public apology and said he had let his emotions get the better of him. He has since been fired, however, with Rick Cohen, managing partner of Goldberg Segalla, also posting a video on YouTube to explain why.
In it, Cohen said that qualities such as respect, kindness and diversity are values that are important to the firm and that O’Connell’s comments are inconsistent with those.
“Clive’s comments are entirely inconsistent with our ethos. His words are offensive plain and simple. For these reasons, we have terminated our partnership with O’Connell effective immediately,” he said.
