QBE poaches Allianz exec to head small business segment

QBE Insurance has hired Allianz executive Aaron Gavin as head of SME (small and medium enterprises) for its Australian and New Zealand operations.

Most recently, Gavin was the national underwriting manager for SME & personal lines, broker and agency commercial at Allianz. He has over 20 years of experience in the insurance industry.

Gavin will take up the newly-created role, reporting to Jason Clarke, executive general manager intermediary distribution, in March.

According to Clarke, the role was created to provide the necessary focus and expertise to develop and drive the vision in this sector, in alignment with the broader business strategy.

“The SME market already represents a significant share of our existing portfolio, but is also one of our areas of focus for growth. As such, we needed a dedicated resource to build on the momentum we’ve already made in this space,” Clarke said.

“As we look to become a more truly customer-centric business, we need to get closer to our end customers, but we’ll continue to work collaboratively with our valued broker partners to ensure we deliver the best possible end-to-end experience.”

Commenting on the appointment, Clarke said: “He [Gavin] has extensive portfolio management experience with a strong track record of delivering profitable growth in various product lines as well as claims management experience within Personal Lines. Aaron also has a global perspective, having spent two-and-a-half years working in Europe, driving the implementation of best practices in pricing and underwriting.”
