Sompo International ramps up expansion in Europe

Specialty re/insurer  Sompo International has appointed a new country manager to oversee its insurance operations in Spain and Portugal as it looks to further expand its footprint and service offerings across multiple countries in Europe.

Jamie Cañellas (pictured) has been named country manager of its insurance operations in Iberia.

With over 30 years of industry experience, Cañellas joined Sompo International in 2018 and most recently held the role of head of distribution for Europe. He is based in Barcelona and reports to Ralph Brand, president Continental Europe Insurance.

“This is an exciting time for Sompo International in Europe as we ramp up our insurance footprint and service offerings across multiple countries. Spain and Portugal are markets characterised by a blend of multinational enterprises and vibrant small-to medium-sized enterprises, as well as a rising demand for insurers that can offer global reach, financial strength and a broad product offering,” said Brand.

He added: “As we continue the expansion of our offerings in Iberia, Jamie’s deep knowledge of the insurance industry and the region will be crucial in enabling us to better serve local clients and international businesses looking for excellent underwriting, claims and risk engineering capabilities.”
