XL hires marine underwriter from AIG

Insurer XL Group has appointed Rubén Chanona, formerly of AIG, as senior marine underwriter in Mexico to lead its Mexican marine insurance business.

Chanona brings 10 years of insurance industry experience to his new role. Before joining XL Group, most recently he held the role of cargo and marine liability underwriting manager at AIG Mexico.

Based in Mexico City, he will report to Lee Meyrick, chief underwriting officer global marine & offshore energy and to Alvaro Salamanca, country manager of XL Group’s insurance operation in Mexico.

Meyrick said: “XL Group has considerable experience in providing all forms of marine insurance to cover a wide portfolio of risks for multinationals. Rubén is an experienced insurance professional who adds proven technical skills and in-depth knowledge of the local market to the team. I count on him to profitably build our business in Mexico with new and existing products that continue to meet our clients and brokers’ needs.”

Salamanca added: “I’m delighted about Rubén’s appointment. With him on board we are strengthening our insurance offering in Mexico, and underlining XL Group’s commitment to serving clients in Mexico and the Latin America region.”
