Marsh taps top talent from AIG to lead Dutch marine business

Global insurance brokerage Marsh, a business of Marsh McLennan, has appointed a new marine broking director in the Netherlands, who will join the business this summer from AIG.

Koen van Leuven will join Marsh Netherlands as marine broking director, based in Rotterdam. He will report to Ivo Wansink, specialty and placement leader, Marsh Netherlands, and Kristof De Bremme, head of marine, cargo and logistics, Europe, Marsh Specialty.

Van Leuven will lead Marsh Netherlands’ marine business, which provides hull and cargo insurance broking services and risk advisory expertise to the country’s maritime sector. He will also be responsible for coordinating Marsh’s specialist logistics services across Europe, which will include optimising cross-country operations and the development of new solutions that support clients in managing their supply chain and logistics risks.

Van Leuven will join Marsh from AIG, where he is head of marine for Talbot Underwriting Services and AIG UK, a position he has held since 2022. He joined AIG in 2008 and has held senior marine underwriting positions in both London and Rotterdam, during which time he managed multiple complex marine insurance portfolios.

Wansink said: “The Dutch shipping industry plays a vital role in the global maritime ecosystem, and its commitment to the development of the country’s blue economy holds immense potential for sustainable growth opportunities.

“Marsh is committed to attracting top talent and investing in its leadership team to better serve its clients as they navigate the challenges and opportunities in this dynamic sector. Koen is widely respected among his peers and, with his in-depth knowledge of the global marine industry, will be a very welcome addition to the team.”

De Bremme added: “The logistics industry in Europe is expected to reach 1.1 trillion EUR by 2029. Koen’s appointment forms part of Marsh Specialty’s strategy to provide market leading marine, cargo and logistics solutions to support our European clients as they take on new challenges.”
