60 seconds with Florian Tischer

Florian Tischer, the recently appointed underwriter at ANV’s mergers & acquisitions (M&A) team speaks to Intelligent Insurer about his move into insurance, his strong mathematics skills and his love of a good gadget.

Why is this move right for you at this stage in your career?

ANV is a growing company, while still retaining a lot of the opportunities only start-up companies can provide. I very much like and share the progressive thinking at ANV. It has set a strong focus on developing the M&A insurance product line which I am really happy to be a part of.

What will you bring to the role?

I have more than five years’ experience as a lawyer in Germany and have worked at international law firms Weil, Gotshal and Manges LLP and Fieldfisher. The knowledge I have acquired from my previous roles will be of great help in understanding the needs and requirements of ANV’s clients. In addition, I also have a solid understanding of the mathematics behind the risk assessment process required for underwriting. I was studying and working in IT before I started my legal career.

What are your initial objectives in the new role?

Initially, I will be tasked with strengthening our brand in the German speaking markets with a particular focus on Germany itself. ANV already has a very good reputation in the warranties and Indemnities (W&I) insurance market due to its great customer service backed by the strong Lloyd’s security it is able to provide. I’m looking forward to building upon that foundation in a market which is undergoing rapid change.

What will be your biggest challenge in the new role?

While the German transaction market is huge, the number of transactions where W&I insurance is bought is still comparatively low compared to mature markets like the UK. That said, recently there has been significant take up of this product globally. In my opinion, this is due to a better understanding of the increased risks in a globally interconnected world and the fact that more and more managers are being held accountable for their actions by shareholders. This challenge is also my primary focus.

Why did you choose to work in this industry initially?

This is actually my first job in insurance. I was drawn to the industry because I can apply my mathematical and statistical brain to some really exciting and important issues.

If you had chosen a different profession/career path, what would it have been?

Probably something in science. I’ve always been fascinated by the fundamental research undertaken in this field to determine who we are and how the universe works. My friends have told me that I would suit being a university professor too.

What is your secret vice?

Anyone who knows me is very well aware of my tendency to spend far too much money on all kinds of technical gadgets and tools. If it’s complicated enough, I will buy it!
