Aegon appoints ex-ING senior exec as CFO

Netherland-based insurance group Aegon has appointed Matthew Rider as the chief financial officer (CFO) and member of the executive board at its annual general shareholder meeting.

Rider succeeds Darryl Button and will start from January 2017. Button is leaving in December to return to the US after serving Aegon for four years as CFO.

Rider joins the company after a sabbatical following over 25 years in various roles within the financial services industry.

Prior to the sabbatical, he was a member of ING's management board for insurance until 2013, having served ING insurance as chief financial officer and its US retail annuity business as head of product development.

Rider has held various positions in the Merrill Lynch insurance group, including chief actuary and chief investment officer. He has also worked for Transamerica and Banner Life insurance company.

"We are very pleased that Matthew is joining Aegon. He brings a broad range of experience, including managing finance and risk functions and developing a Solvency II framework,” said Rob Routs, chairman of Aegon’s supervisory board.

“We look forward to benefiting from his extensive knowledge in banking and insurance in Europe and the United States."

Rider said: "Having already spent a memorable couple of years working for Transamerica at the start of my career, I'm particularly excited to be joining Aegon and seeing the remarkable transformation the company has been through, and supporting its onward journey.”

In an earlier statement, Button had said: "This has been a difficult decision, but it is in the best interest of my family. I'm grateful for having had the opportunity to contribute to the company's strategic progress and I leave Aegon with a highly talented and reliable team in place."
