AXA to offer travel insurance in China via WeChat

French insurance group AXA has unveiled a new programme AXA Go in China to offer travel insurance through Chinese messaging app WeChat.

WeChat is China's most popular app, allowing users to access instant messaging and manage a wide range of e-commerce services, including a payment terminal, within the same platform. It has over 1 billion monthly active users.

AXA announced on Chinese New Year 2019 (Feb. 5) that it is launching a mini-program integrated into WeChat Go, the app ecosystem dedicated to international tourism.

The insurer said it would be an "entirely new form of travel insurance", including information on the destination country (typical weather, social climate, sanitary conditions, etc.), emergency button for repatriation or hospitalisation, claims due to late or lost luggage, and fast lanes for premium users, among others.

AXA said it had been testing the new programme AXA Go for almost eight months and that it has proved its value during the development phase.
