Beazley taps XL Catlin and Zurich execs for specialist lines

Specialist insurer Beazley has expanded its international specialty lines team with the appointment of Estefania Taboada and Ana Misol as financial lines underwriters in Barcelona.

Taboada joins Beazley from XL Catlin where she was underwriting manager, Iberia, within the financial lines team. Taboada has a wide knowledge of the European financial lines and professional lines markets, having also worked in Paris and Zurich, according to the statement.

Specialising in financial lines and security & privacy business (cyber), Misol joins from Zurich where she headed their professional indemnity and security & privacy practice for the Nordic region, prior to which she underwrote specialist lines business for Catalonia and the Balearic Islands at Markel, and was responsible for a financial lines portfolio at Zurich Spain.

In the new position, both the executives will be responsible for developing Beazley’s financial lines book of business in Spain and other selected Continental European markets, working closely with local brokers, drawing on their wide knowledge, experience and network.

Lorena Segovia, who was appointed to the newly-created role of financial lines regional manager for Continental Europe in May this year, said: "Our strategy to create a European hub for our specialist lines division is on track. With Estefania and Ana joining us, we now have a solid base to build on our financial lines capabilities to serve selected markets in Continental Europe, starting in Spain where we will shortly be launching our financial lines products. Our strategy is to add to our underwriting teams in Barcelona, Paris and Munich in the coming months."

European markets are a major focus for Beazley as it grows its speciality lines business outside the United States. Having recently received authorisation for its Dublin-based European insurance company, Beazley can now offer both company and Lloyd’s paper to brokers and clients.

17 October 2017   Beazley is seeking rate increases of between 5 and 10 percent on all international non-loss affected renewals, and potentially bigger increases on US lines as it looks to improve its return on capital, Patrick Hartigan, team leader, treaty team at Beazley, told PCI Today. Lines hit by losses could go up even more.
Insurance
9 November 2017   Beazley enjoyed strong growth overall in the first nine months of 2017 but its reinsurance division shrank as the company reduced it because of continued rate decreases – a trend it expects to reverse on cat business, at least, because of the recent heavy losses in North America.
