The Montecito mudslide in California in January 2018 has caused over 2,000 insurance claims totalling more than $421 million, according to insurance commissioner Dave Jones.
In January, heavy rains caused rivers of mud and debris to run down from hillsides in Santa Barbara County, demolishing homes in the affluent seaside community of Montecito.
In total, the catastrophe destroyed or damaged more than 400 homes and businesses and also killed 21 people.
