Chaucer backs Swiss start-up Clavis Re

Clavis Re, a start-up underwriting platform formed in Zurich, Switzerland, has secured the backing of Chaucer Syndicates to launch a new specialty coverholder business at Lloyd’s.

Chaucer will act as sponsor to Lloyd’s for Clavis Re, allowing the business to underwrite a global credit and surety reinsurance account. Chaucer Syndicate 1084 will lead the binding authority, which commits business on behalf of Lloyd’s Syndicates managed by Chaucer, Kiln, Canopius and Atrium.

Clavis Re is led by former Ariel Re executives Thomas Rothenberger and Alban Fauchère, who both have long track records of forming and managing similar underwriting operations.

Rothenberger said: “With the strong support from four of Lloyd’s most distinguished syndicates, we are able to provide our clients with quality reinsurance capacity and to also address their capital and peak risk management needs.”

John Fowle, active underwriter of Chaucer Syndicate 1084, added: “We are delighted to be adding the highly experienced and reputable team at Clavis Re to our specialty client offering, complementing and diversifying our existing lines.”
