Cyclone Friederike insured losses at €1.7bn: PERILS

The re/insurance industry loss from extratropical cyclone Friederike (also called David) has reached €1.68 billion, according to Zurich-based catastrophe insurance data provider PERILS.

The storm caused significant damage across the British Isles, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany on 17 and 18 January 2018. The majority of the losses occurred in Germany and the Netherlands. The total market loss from Friederike is said to be the highest since winter storm Klaus hit France on 24 January 2009.

PERILS’ third estimate of the insured property market loss for Friederike is based on loss data collected from affected insurers, and compares to its previous loss estimate from 17 April 2018 of €1.63 billion.
